Sorry for the pun, but a look at the gas mileage for the 2005 Ford Escape and you may forgive me somewhat -- almost 40 mpg on the open road. Add in the fact that's it's available in a hybrid version, and you've got some (there I go again) real fuel for thought.
Big bonus: the battery pack never has to be plugged in, contrary to popular belief. The engine takes care of the recharge, automatically, so you could say the 2005 Ford Escape is a smart car indeed -- even if it is a compact SUV.
